The IBM mainframe (Z Systems) is responsible for most credit card transactions and is used by the many of the top insurers, banks, retailers, and airlines. IBM z/VM® is an operating system with highly secure and scalable hypervisor and virtualization technology designed to run Linux®, z/OS®, z/VSE® and z/TPF virtual machines as well as Red Hat® OpenShift® on IBM zSystems™ and IBM LinuxONE servers. z/VM provides a highly secure and scalable environment for efficiently running critical Linux applications, with support for more Linux virtual servers than any other platform in a single footprint.
The z/VM team is a worldwide team, primarily located in Poughkeepsie, NY with extended team in Bangalore, India. All phases of the software life cycle are performed within this team, including the design, development, test, performance, as well as supporting the product in the field with customers. Agile methodologies are used throughout the life cycle.
We are looking for qualified software engineer candidates to be part of our IBM Z Systems team, to help us take z/VM virtualization to the next level on the mainframe
We are seeking a mid-level engineer to join Linux on Z software development team. In this role, you will architect, design and develop application, tools that process and transform the various Z system generated metrics, monitoring and tracing data. Such customer facing application or tools to be used in the stand-alone or distributed environment. The transformed data would further be consumed by different industry standard observability tools like Instana, Grafana, Prometheus etc or any other visualization tools. We expect the candidates to be familiar with effective real-time processing of large amount of system generated metrics, logs and traces, which will also include processing of historical data. Velocity of data generation also to be considered.
Individual is required to have adequate expertise in the below aspects:
1. Familiarity with various input and output data formats and observability aspects
2. Expertise in scalable application development life cycle (design, develop, deploy, maintain) is an essential skill
3. Familiarity with generation of relevant documentation of applications features, usage, trouble shooting.
4. Mentoring, guiding team members in application development, diagnosis and support.
5. Ability to learn new technologies quickly
- 6-10 Years of relevant experience in developing SW for Linux/Unix variant products.
- · Expertise in programming languages like Python, additionally proficiency in one or more languages such as Go, RUST, C, C++
- · Scalable client-server application development
- · Extremely comfortable in Linux/Unix development environment - commands/shell, Libraries and managing the development environment & Linux Administration.
- · Experience working with complex systems and abilities to develop new features and able to fix any existing issues.
- · Strong team player with good communication and interpersonal skills
- · Proven ability to work effectively in a global team environment
- · Proven command over the English language, both written and verbal
- Knowledge of Observability tools collectors, deployment procedures
- · Development or use of any of dashboard for Instana, Grafana, Prometheus
- · Development or use of Performance Visualization or system health indicator tools and techniques
- · Familiarity with data analysis and correlation techniques
- · Familiarity with CI/CD software development practices
