Candidates for this position will define scope and objectives for technical projects in the area of their specialty, varying in size and complexity. Day-to-day responsibilities will include troubleshooting of the applications, systems, and support of the mainframe offering environment. The working environment requires the candidate to work independently, where guidelines are available but are not always specific. They will also frequently contribute to the development of new theories and methods to resolve applications support issues.
Ultimately, the role of the Mainframe Systems Engineer is to ensure the optimal performance and reliability of our mainframe systems in compliance with company standards and best practices.
The candidate will be responsible for delivery, support, management, and overall functions of the system and supporting applications pertaining to the IBM mainframe environment. This will include troubleshooting, offering resolutions, or resolving technical errors and issues arising from the use of the systems and applications.
The environment includes IBM mainframes, DASD, internal management applications, and customer-facing services. The mainframe engineering team is responsible for maintaining a high level of stability and security, while minimizing system outages of the applications and systems supported. They are directly responsible for the planning of and participation in the maintenance/enhancements of the supported systems and keeping microcode at a reasonable current level.
This candidate will also act as a mentor to other technical engineers and may be asked to act as a project lead where appropriate.
Duties include but not limited to:
· Design, develop and maintain mainframe systems
· Perform system installations and upgrades
· Conduct system performance tuning and capacity planning
· Troubleshoot hardware and software problems, and take corrective action
· Monitor system performance and availability to ensure reliability and scalability
· Create and maintain system documentation and reports
· Ensure system security compliance
· Develop automation scripts to streamline IPL, operational tasks
· Coordinate with other IT teams for integration and support issues
· Stay abreast of advances in technology and industry best practices
- Proven work experience as a Mainframe Systems Engineer or similar role
- Excellent knowledge of SMPE, JCL
- Working knowledge of COBOL, DB2, CICS, WAS, OMVS, IBM Storage (CSM), RACF(ZSecure), SMS, Rexx (As it pertains to automation with Netview).
- Experience with mainframe systems management and security practices
- Ability to troubleshoot and resolve system problems

- Experience in Data Center Migration, including Sysgen Creation, HMC, DASD, and LPAR configuration
- Experience in DS8000 Replication
- Knowledge of Channel Addressing and TCPIP/VTAM
- Strong knowledge of MVS / zOS
- Experience in automation scripting
- Previous JES3 / JES2 migration.
- zOS Upgrade/Install using zOSMF
- Experience with previous Mainframe Moves/Migrations.
