Introduction

As a theoretical research scientist at IBM Quantum, you will be responsible for developing novel compilation techniques for near-term and fault-tolerant quantum computers. You will be working with the quantum algorithms and error correction teams to design and test fault-tolerant circuits for error-corrected architectures and perform resource estimates for algorithms of interest. You mayalso perform fundamental theory work on the complexity of quantum circuits or work with experimental teams to design optimized circuits or develop algorithms for practical problems of interest.

Successful candidates for this role have strong knowledge of quantum circuits and quantum information and possess research and development skills to tackle challenging problems in quantum algorithms and compilation. They possess a broad grasp of the literature and will quickly prototype new research ideas, communicate their results verbally and in writing, and work in a highly collaborative team.

Senior researchers are expected to develop a broad research agenda and influence IBM research strategy by leading strategic research projects, defining objectives and key results, and providing feedback to align projects with overall research priorities. Senior researchers also contribute to the internal growth of the team by influencing hiring decisions, serving as mentors to junior researchers, creating growth opportunities for teammates, and managing a team.
