Role:
IBM’s Blue Studio design practice is looking for an experienced and highly motivated Motion Designer who is passionate about creating motion graphics clearly rooted in design. This motion designer should present a portfolio of work that features strong typographic and illustration animation with a clean, modern sensibility. The portfolio should demonstrate as much thoughtfulness about the design elements as the technical animation. CGI and 3D are good to see but formal 2D work is particularly important. The right candidate will also have conceptual skills for creating innovative motion work aligned to identity systems, as well as experience working across animation platforms. Work may include a range of animated and video assets, including brand documentation and development centering around animation, large scale event experiences and assets for online platforms.
Your primary responsibilities will include:
- Execute brilliant 2D animations that start with an elegant minimalist design concept.
- Build toward scaling the motion design practice toward efficiency and effectiveness across the studio.
- Work independently on complex projects, as well as lead design teams on larger scale efforts.
- Produce sketches, storyboards, and develop animated sequences and stories.
- Bring abstract concepts to life, communicating a story with an identity-aligned approach to animation.
- Maintain a deep understanding of IBM’s business strategies and goals.
- Hold command of IBM brand’s vision, systems, and documentation.
- Help advance animation design at IBM.
- Work with leadership and design team members to establish priority, fidelity and delivery of tasks.
- Effectively communicate conceptual ideas and detailed design rationale both verbally and visually.
- Speak and present to range of stakeholders.
- Ensure quality control and outcomes.
Required Experience:
- 3-5+ years of relevant experience in a motion design position.
- A passion for well-conceived and crafted animation, and the ability to distinguish good, innovative design from bad, careless work.
- A personal portfolio of animated experiences built across assets, ideally tailored to a brand identity.
- Knowledge of grids, typography, graphic design, color, layout, iconography, imagery, and design patterns and systems to address ambiguous, complex problems and projects.
- Demonstrated problem solving skills and idea generation, effectively visualizing and creating concepts.
- A history of investigating, innovating, and developing creative with an emphasis on brand experience and design.
- The ability to embrace feedback and review of work, accept and act upon creative/technical direction, and respond in an agile manner to data/analytics results.
- Experience in an agile development environment and team.
- A professional attitude that is passionate, confident, empathetic, positive and approachable.
- Attention-to-detail, strong organizational skills and time management.
- Collaboration with others—creative directors, stakeholders, technical teams, partners and other designers.
- Support toward design leadership and creating a team dynamic.

- Applications: Adobe Creative Suite (highly proficient), AfterEffects; nice to have Cinema4D, Blender, Premiere
